With the Met Office issuing a Red Extreme Heat Warning and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirming a Red Heat-Health Alert for six regions, it is vital that social care employers and staff take immediate action.
The combination of soaring temperatures and the necessity of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) creates a significant risk of heat stress. This occurs when the body is unable to cool itself, leading to heat exhaustion and, in severe cases, life-threatening heat stroke.
We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the continuity of care. Here are the key actions to take:
For Employers and Managers:
- Assess and Control: Evaluate the risk of overheating in your workplace. Prioritise environmental controls like improving ventilation or reducing heat sources where possible.
- Plan for Demand: Staff will need more breaks to cool down, and PPE will need to be changed more frequently. Ensure you have sufficient supplies and consider the need for extra staff to maintain service levels.
- Communicate: Make sure all staff are aware of the risks and have received the latest alerts and safety information.
- Support Vulnerable Staff: Be aware that some team members may be more susceptible to the heat.
For Staff:
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids. Use your urine colour as a quick check – dark or strong-smelling urine means you need to drink more.
- Rest: Take regular breaks in a cool area. Don’t wait until you feel unwell.
- Buddy Up: Look out for your colleagues. Watch for early signs of heat stress, such as confusion, pale/clammy skin, or fast breathing.
- Recover: Try to stay as cool as possible between shifts to allow your body to recover.
By implementing these measures, we can protect our hardworking staff and ensure safe care throughout this period of extreme heat.
