Royal College of Nursing Listening Event

What is this event about?

The RCN will hold a series of listening events with nursing staff working in the social care sector across England to deepen their understanding of the issues impacting the social care nursing workforce. This will include a detailed exploration of sector-specific workforce challenges such as pay structures, career progression, working conditions, and recruitment and retention. They also plan to gather members’ views on the necessary changes and improvements to tackle these issues, enabling them to produce evidence-based policy recommendations on supply, recruitment, retention, career development, pay, and integration with the wider health system.

The event will take place on Wednesday 22nd April at 6.00pm, the events will be held online via MS Teams. You will receive the electronic invitation by email and will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

The events will be chaired by the RCN Professional Lead Nurses for Independent Health and Social Care, with members of the research team providing support role.

Agenda of the event
  • Introduction by chair with context for discussion
  • Discussion of specific issues affecting the adult social care nursing workforce
  • Discussion of solutions – what are the changes that are needed
  • Chair to recap key themes from discussion and indicate RCN next steps
  • Closing remarks
Background

Adult social care (ASC) is experiencing unprecedented strain due to persistent underinvestment, workforce planning and shortages, and increasing demand from a growing and ageing population.

There is an urgent need for high-quality, targeted evidence to shape a distinct policy stance that reflects the realities of social care fit for the future. Nursing staff in ASC not only deliver complex care but also play critical roles in leading services, coordinating hospital discharges, managing chronic and complex conditions, and supporting population health. Their role is essential to achieving integrated, safety-critical, person-centred care.

Ahead of these events, the RCN conducted a nationwide, large-scale survey of registered nurses and healthcare support workers to gather quantitative insights into the supply, retention, and experience of the adult social care registered nursing workforce, as well as ideas for change. The survey also provided spaces for respondents to share suggestions for improving recruitment, retention, and system integration—offering early input for shaping policy development. This listening event is to expand on the survey results with ASC nurses.
