In our latest webinar, Sue Jones, Director of Social Care at the Institute of Health and Social Care Management, explores the critical topic of managing overwhelm and isolation by building stronger connections.

Drawing on the work of Michael West on compassionate leadership, Sue introduces a practical framework for self-compassion, focusing on four key dimensions: attending to our own warning signs, understanding our challenges, empathising with ourselves, and learning how to effectively help ourselves.

NorCA Premium members have access for their entire organisation to the Institute of Health and Social Care Management.

Sue talks about the brain chemistry behind stress and wellbeing, contrasting the negative effects of prolonged cortisol and adrenaline with the “happy chemicals” – dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. She offers practical, everyday strategies to boost these chemicals, from ticking off a to-do list to practising loving-kindness meditation and using a simple 4-7-8 breathing technique. The session also covers how to build relationships across boundaries, using Nigel Risner’s “zookeeper” model to understand different traits, and emphasises the importance of values in creating trust and respect.
